Spartans React: Kenneth Walker III isn’t the only Michigan State home run

The Spartans’ running back is undoubtedly in the Heisman conversation, but the MSU offense has threats to go around.

The Michigan State Spartans are 6-0, already bowl eligible, and with bigger plans all of a sudden. That is due, in large part, to the explosive MSU offense.

The driving force in that offense is transfer running back Kenneth Walker III. Already a breakout star, Walker has been included in Heisman Trophy conversations around the country. But according to Michigan State fans, the running back should be more than just in the conversation.

According to the most recent SB Nation Reacts survey, MSU fans think Walker is a frontrunner in the Heisman Trophy race. If Walker were to win the award, he’d be the first ever Heisman winner from Michigan State. The Spartans have twice topped out with a player finishing third in voting, and not since Sherman Lewis in 1963.

But what has made the Spartans so special this season is their growing ability to find big plays even without Walker touching the ball. With the help of an ever-improving Payton Thorne at quarterback, Michigan State has two emerging stars at wide receiver.

MSU fans believe Jayden Reed is the team’s biggest home run threat. Reed has proven dangerous not only as a pass catcher, but also on returns, taking a punt return to the house against Nebraska and then doing it again the very next week against Western Kentucky. Reed edged out his partner on the edge, Jalen Nailor, who is fresh off of a three-touchdown performance against Rutgers.

With all that firepower, it’s not a surprise that Michigan State fans are confident in the team heading into Saturday’s game against Indiana. According to the survey, 97 percent of fans believe the Spartans will keep rolling and earn another Big Ten win against the Hoosiers.

The Spartans hope to stay undefeated and keep their growing hopes of a Big Ten Championship, or even a birth in the College Football Playoff, alive. For now, it feels like a longshot even among MSU fans.

When fans around the country were asked which four teams they think deserve to earn a bid to the CFP, they selected a pair of SEC teams, a Big Ten participant and finally a Group of Five member.

While the Spartans are fully focused on keeping their perfect season alive and winning back the Old Brass Spittoon, the rest of the country is understandably focused elsewhere. According to nearly two-thirds of national college football fans, the most exciting game this weekend is a clash between two undefeated SEC teams when No. 11 Kentucky heads to No. 1 Georgia.
