Maryland was defeated by the Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday, which set up the No. 8 versus No. 9 matchup against Michigan State in Indianapolis.
The Spartans finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-11, with a 9-11 mark in Big Ten play. The Terps had a final regular season record of 15-12, and also went 9-11 conference play. However, Maryland owns the head-to-head tiebreaker after defeating Michigan State 73-55 in College Park on Feb. 28. That loss snapped a three-game winning streak for MSU at the time.
Now Michigan State will have the opportunity to avenge that loss to Maryland. The winner of Thursday’s contest will go on to face the No. 1 seed in Michigan on Friday. If Michigan State advances, it will be the Spartans’ third game against the Wolverines in eight days.
