First, a few basics:

Michigan State:

Adam Nightingale’s Spartans are red hot coming into this afternoon’s game, with an unbeaten streak that reached 7 on Friday night, as they tied Minnesota and picked up the extra point in the shootout. MSU is 10-3-2 overall, and 5-0-2 in Big Ten play this season. Freshman goaltender Trey Augustine made 44 saves in the exciting back-and-forth duel, while Joey Larson, Tiernan Shoudy, and Nash Nienhuis scored for the Spartans.

Minnesota:

Usual Big Ten power Minnesota has underwhelmed so far this season compared to their typical standard of excellence, as they are 6-4-3 overall and 2-3-2 in conference play. The Gophers outshot MSU 47-28 on Friday night, playing an overall cleaner game than the Spartans, spending 15 fewer minutes in the penalty box. Bryce Brodzinski, the Gophers forward and Philadelphia Flyers draft pick, scored a notable goal late in a 5 minute Spartan penalty, while Connor Kurth and Rhett Pitlick added goals as well for Minnesota.
