Some basics to sound like a pro:

Michigan State:

The Spartans are struggling. This team was expected to be in the national championship conversation from the first tip through the final weekend of the season. Instead, the Spartans are 3-3, with losses against the two major opponents they faced (Arizona and Duke) and an upset loss to James Madison at home. It would be a third loss to a high-profile opponent if the scrimmage loss against Tennessee counted. MSU is now out of the Top 25.

The roster was supposed to be led by savvy veterans and sparked by high profile freshmen. None of that has really worked out as well as expected.

Michigan State’s senior point guard, AJ Hoggard and junior wing Jaden Akins have both struggled. Two freshmen, Coen Carr and Jeremy Fears, are playing well but the highest ranked recruit, Xavier Booker, has essentially played zero impact minutes this season.

It’s still early and team leaders like Tyson Walker and Malik Hall have had solid moments - particularly Walker. This game should see the Spartans explore their depth and try to get their struggling stars rolling.

Georgia Southern University

The Eagles are not expected to challenge Michigan State. They have been blown out in every game this season except for one. Their defense has let all but one of their opponents score more than 80 points.

Their offense has shown some spark, scoring 92 in one of their losses. The Eagles are led by Deuce Dean and his 12.8 points per game as well as Jamar Franklin at 11.2 points per game. Malik Tidwell is starting to come as he adjusts to the Division I level and reached double digits in three of the last four games.

This game will be a tough test for the Eagles who most likely are hoping to simply compete.

Then again the same thing was once said about James Madison this season…
