MSU hockey is coming off a road split with Notre Dame - would have been nice to gain some ground in the standings, but ultimately Wisconsin's overtime / shootout split hosting Minnesota meant both teams picked up 3 points. MSU leads by 5 points with 6 games to go - Wisconsin has 8 games left. B1G standings as of today (from uscho.com):
While Notre Dame, Minnesota and Michigan could still theoretically go on a run to winning the regular season, it looks increasingly likely that the B1G will be decided with the March 1 and 2 showdown in Madison between the Spartans and the Badgers.
This week looks like the biggest single weekend left before that season-ending series. MSU has a road game vs. Michigan Friday night (7:00 - BTN+) followed by the Dual in the D at Little Caesars Arena Saturday (8:30 - BTN). A few weeks ago, MSU and Michigan split a home and home with both road teams winning - Michigan romped at Munn on Friday while MSU had a dramatic comeback victory the next night at Yost. With Wisconsin having 2 games in hand, a regulation sweep vs. Michigan would be huge for MSU's regular season title chances. Following this weekend, MSU has a bye then a home series vs. last-place Ohio State before heading to Madison.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin hosts Notre Dame this weekend - even though this is at home, the Irish are the most likely of the Badgers' remaining opponents to take a few points. I would expect Wisconsin to get at least 3 points here - hopefully ND can play them as tough as they did us this past weekend. Then Wisconsin has 2 road series at Ohio State and at Penn State - the road can be tough, but these are the two worst teams in the B1G this year. I expect the gap in the standings to close and possibly vanish next weekend.
So big hockey games this weekend - I'll personally be at Yost on Friday. Hopefully some other TOCers can make it there or to Detroit on Saturday. If I don't see any main-page hockey content by Friday morning, I'll make a fan-post game thread, but someone else will have to be posting updates during both games this weekend.
Go Green! Beat Michigan!
